How to Plan Shopping for Lighting Before the Sale

Start with the main light

Pendants and chandeliers do the heavy lifting over a dining table, kitchen bench or entry. Over a table, hanging the light roughly 75 to 90 cm above the tabletop is a common starting point. That keeps it low enough to light the table without blocking anyone’s view. Check the drop length and diameter on the product page so the light suits the size of the table and room.

Add lamps for the evenings

Overhead light alone can feel flat at night. Table lamps on bedsides, consoles and side tables add softer pools of light. A floor lamp beside an armchair or the end of a sofa gives you a proper reading light. Mixing bases in ceramic, glass, timber, metal or woven finishes is an easy way to bring some character into a room.

Ceiling fans before summer

Black Friday arrives just before the hottest months, so it’s a sensible time to add a ceiling fan. Match the fan size to the room. For a covered alfresco area, choose an outdoor ceiling fan and check that it’s rated for where it will go. Ceiling fans and hardwired lights need to be installed by a licensed electrician, so factor that into your plans.

Don’t forget the globes

Before you buy, check the fitting type and whether a globe is included with the lamp or pendant. Warm white globes usually suit living rooms and bedrooms best.
